Cushings Disease is a fairly common condition which affects the Endocrine (hormonal) system of dogs, specifically affecting the adrenal glands which are located close to the kidneys. It is properly called Hyperadrenocorticism. This is a big word but it can be broken down as follows:
Hyper- | Over or excessive |
–adreno– | Related to the adrenal gland |
–cortic– | Related to the cortex, or outer part of the adrenel gland |
–ism | condition of |
So the whole word means: A condition invoving overactivity of the adrenal cortex.
